From clean models to dirty stories of care: looking for and looking at the doctors' knowledge in their records

Abstract: Many techniques exist to mine unstructured data and extract valuable information from structured data. These techniques are increasingly used in the healthcare sector and some results are promising, if not convincing. However, I argue that we also need an embodiment turned to the idea of knowledge to make sense of the full potential of the above techniques, and not to be distracted by their success: the ideas of knowledge as embodiment of a social practice and understanding as human data (embodied) interaction are proposed as two complementary triggers for the better use of the current and the next decision support systems to come in the domain of hospital care.
