Documents play an important role in organisations. The way they are created and used can have an important impact on productivity. Our work at the Xerox Research Centre Europe (XRCE) focuses on increasing productivity in the workplace through new document technologies.

While drawing on the strength of the Xerox Corporation around the world, our focus is on Europe. We work with organisations drawn from the continent and reflect their needs and talents. We cooperate with the scientific community and with businesses and their customers to ensure that we develop technologies that are not only innovative, but also match the requirements of the market. Our teams include both researchers and developers who work closely together.

XRCE's primary activity is research. We form partnerships and collaborate with a wide range of European research organisations. We also work with the business divisions of Xerox and with customers to understand their strategy and requirements. Our second activity is a Programme of Advanced Technology Development. We create new document services and prototypes based on our own research and that of the wider Xerox community. We develop markets for these technologies in collaboration with consultants.

Our vision and mission sum up these objectives :
"The Xerox Research Centre Europe is committed to inventing and designing document technologies that business both needs and wants. It pursues a vision of document technology where language, physical location and medium - electronic, paper or other - impose no barrier to effective use."
Its specific mission is become a Centre of Excellence for the understanding of document processes and for the invention of technologies which support them. To carry out research on integrated document services which provide intelligent access and manipulation of multi-lingual digital and paper documents, unconstrained by location and managed through computer supported processes. To undertake software development which fosters technology transfers and exchange with selected European partners, involving technologies from XRCE as well as the wider Xerox research community.
