XRCE at CEPIC Congress 2012, London, UK

May 15-18, 2012
"Not just searching: Finding is the key to effective business" is the theme of this year's "Coordination of European Picture Agencies Stock, Press and Heritage (CEPIC)" congress. Its goal is to be the centre of the picture industry.
Mathieu Chuat, XRCE business development manager, will give two presentations:
1. "What will image search look like in the future"
2. "Visual search" - How can visual analytics play a part in search and retrieval? How effective is it, what can we expect from the technology and how can it help people find images now?

Seminar: Text segmentation in natural images robust to photometric effects, Thursday May 10, 2012

Alain Trémeau, professor, director LIGIV laboratory, University of Saint Etienne, France

One of the most challenging tasks for any computer vision system is to recognize the changes in an image which are due to a change in the underlying imaged surfaces from changes which are due to the effects of the scene illumination. The interactions between lights and surfaces are complex and introduce unwanted artifacts into an image.....read more

Seminar: 'SMECY project - Smart multicore embedded systems', Thursday May 3rd, 11am

Francois Pacull, CEA/LETI, Grenoble.

The SMECY project is an ambitious European initiative involving 27 partners across 9 countries to enable Europe to be the leader in the multi-core domain by developing new programming technologies to enable the exploitation of architectures with hundreds of cores. Multi-core technologies will rapidly provide improved performance, energy saving and cost reduction in parallel computing and will be of strategic value in winning market share in all areas of embedded systems More.

Seminar: Discriminative interlingual representations for NLP 2.30pm April 27th.

Jagadeesh Jagarlamudi, University of Maryland, USA.

The language barrier in many multilingual natural language processing (NLP) tasks, such as name transliteration, mining bilingual word translations, etc., can be overcome by mapping objects (names and words in the respective tasks) from different languages (or "views") into a common low-dimensional subspace. The central idea of our work is to learn low-dimensional subspaces (or interlingual representations) that are effective for various multilingual and monolingual NLP tasks... read more

Seminar: Exploratory Analysis of Urban Data in a Chinese Context , 10am April 27th

Fabien Pfaënder, University of Sino European Technology, University of Shanghai, China and Israel Institute of Technology, Haifa, Israel.

The last five years has seen the rise of urban studies together with Smart Cities. Using massive amount of localized data from various sources (social network, transportation, sensors network, etc.) gives a new dimension to urban sciences as long as one is able to deal with such large heterogeneous dynamic very large data sets.. read more.

Seminar: Probabilistic latent tensor factorisation, Thursday April 26th, 11am.

Taylan Cemgil, Bogazici University,Istanbul, Turkey.

Matrix and tensor factorisations have recently gained significant popularity for various data analysis tasks. In this talk, we will discuss a subset of these models from a statistical modelling perspective, building upon probabilistic generative models and generalised linear models (McCulloch and Nelder). We will illustrate the approach on applications in audio and music processing.
