Researcher in the Large-Scale-Data-Mining group.

RESEARCH

I joined the Learning & Content Analysis (LCA) team as a Research Scientist in 2001. My current research interests mainly focus on Machine Learning techniques applied to Statistical Natural Language Processing and Text Mining. Within the LCA group, I develop tools for applications in fields such as document categorisation, multi-media and multilingual information retrieval and entity extraction.

I am a member of the European Network of Excellence PASCAL (Pattern Analysis, Statistical modelling and ComputAtional Learning) and am also involved in the European IST Project REVEAL THIS (Retrieval of Video and Language for The Home user in an Information Society).

I started my research activities in 1988, in the field of Robotic Dynamics and Control after which I joined the Joint Research Centre of the European Communities to work on biological metaphors (Genetic Algorithms, Neural Networks and Immune Networks) applied to process control. After spending one year as a Visiting Scientist at York University (UK), I spent 4 years applying Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Techniques in Industry (Tractebel - Suez). I then worked as a Data Mining Senior Consultant and led Projects in most major Belgian banks and utilities.

I have a PhD in Applied Sciences from the University of Brussels.
